John Trumbull

John Trumbull portraits and history paintings from the imported National Gallery collection records. Artulu thanks the National Gallery of Art for making this collection available for study, storytelling, and public appreciation.

Shown from the chest up, a pale-skinned man wearing a coat and cravat looks off to our left with his chin tipped slightly up in this vertical portrait painting. The man’s shoulders and chest face us, but he turns to the left to look off in that direction with blue eyes under straight brows that angle up toward the center. He has a straight nose, rosy cheeks, full, bow-shaped lips, and a double chin. His wavy gray hair is brushed back from his high forehead and falls to his ears. His ivory-white ascot has a lacy border and is tied snugly around his neck with a bow in front. It is tucked into the high collar of his camel-brown jacket. His right arm, on our left, angles away from his body while the other is close to his side. He is warmly lit from the front set against a dark brown background.

This painting shows a man standing confidently with one hand on his hip and the other resting on a large, rusty anchor. His body is slightly turned to the right while his head is turned towards us, and one of his knees is slightly bent. The man has fair skin with rosy cheeks and a neutral expression. His hair is white and styled in faint curls that fall down around his chin and the tops of his shoulders. He wears an olive-green coat with brass buttons, a matching waistcoat over a white cravat, knee-length, olive-green breeches, white stockings, and black shoes with brass buckles. He stands on the edge of a sandy shore, and to the left are a pile of barrels and crates. The background includes a cloudy sky and a glimpse of the sea with waves and distant cliffs visible in the distance.

Shown from the chest up, a pale-skinned, clean-shaven man wearing black looks off to our left against a dark brown background in this vertical portrait painting. His shoulders are angled to our left and he gazes off with steady, dark eyes. He has low, dark brows, a bumped nose, a strong jaw, a pointed chin, and his lips curl in a slight smile. His gray hair is brushed back from his forehead and gathered loosely at the nape of his neck. The sideburn we can see is a row of gray curls angling down over the ear. A cream-white ascot is tied in a bow around his neck and tucked into the collar of his black coat. His left arm, closer to us, is by his side and his other arm is held out so it angles into the lower left corner. Light from our left creates an amber glow around his face on the otherwise dark background.
